I don't know if this can be considered a debate, but I was just wondering, what is a family, what should it be made up of, and what's the most important component in a group of people to be considered a family?

Well they do say the family of the 21st century is made of friends rarther then relatives. There are rearly two schools of thought that I have come across, 1. that a family can only be made up of people that are related to you and 2. A family is a group of people that you choose to spend quality time with, and devote yourself too.

Certainly the idea of 'unconditional' love within familys is a bizzare one to me, If my parents commited intentional murder I would wish to have noting to do with them, the same with friends.

Sorry, my train of concentration is rarther runined tonight, but if you want to debate and raise anymore issues then just reply to this one and I'll be happy to when I have had more sleep!

A family can be viewed as those directly related to one, or a group of friends with whom one may have shared important events or who understand one another from close friendships, etc. There isn't really any specific thing it should be made up of; just individuals who care deeply for one another. I believe the most important component in a family is understanding, for from that comes empathy which in turn breeds compassion. (Idealy) Of course, there are blood-related families who are completely dysfuntional and friend-families who are closer than kin, so I also believe personality and beliefs share a major role.
